A Love Letter to Warthogs
Dear warthogs: we didn’t get off to a great start. I judged you early, and I judged you wrongly.
Forbidden Love in the Bush - my next novel
Disney’s protrayal of you as a smelly, bumbling animal was so far from the truth! Yes, you have a wart-ridden face. It is overshadowed by your gorgeous mane and beautiful tooth-tusks.
I’m so thankful for our companionship during our time in the Okavango Delta of Botswana. Whenever we felt like we were lacking for wildlife views; there you were.
Warthog bolts from his den
Sometimes we would see you with your family digging for roots or romping across the dry pan. Sometimes you would surprise us by bolting out of a den inside a termite mound! And even when we would frighten you and you would start trotting away, you would still pause and turn to us to show that you were still interested in our well-being.
Warthog beauty shot
I would like to close the letter with a beauty shot that I took of you. This photo will stay close to me as I look back to remember my time in the Okavango, and even more to remember the moments we shared together.
Love, Chris
